At this time of year, many Tech students take time to celebrate and spend time with family for a variety of reasons. During a season of food, travel, and freezing weather, our environment and regular habits can change, causing risks to our health. During this chaotic time of the year, it is important to find ways to continue to care for ourselves. Here are a few ways to stay healthy during the holiday season:
Stay Hydrated Although it can be difficult to remember to drink water when the weather is cold, our bodies still need plenty of water! Hydration in the winter is particularly important to keep your skin from drying out, protecting your immune system, and helping with digestion in case you overeat. If you find yourself forgetting to drink water, try carrying a water bottle, and try forgoing pop or eggnog with your meals and drink water instead.
Stay Nourished In the winter months, it is important we remember to maintain a varied and nutritious diet. When you’re eating your hearty holiday feasts, try throwing in fruit or vegetable! And if you eat a few too many plates of casseroles or snowman-shaped cookies, don’t panic! Your body can recover. After overeating, Healthline Magazine recommends trying yoga, going for a walk, and NOT skipping later meals.
Keep Moving! When we get busy and the weather gets cold, it can be easy to want to stay curled up in a ball under a bunch of blankets and never move again. However, especially during such a stressful time, it is crucial we stay active. Try using exercise videos on Youtube (I highly recommend the channel Yoga With Adriene), taking a trip to the gym, taking up fun winter activities, such as skiing or snowshoeing, or even simply going on a walk on a warmer winter day.
Although the holiday season can be chaotic, it is important we remember to take care of ourselves; it is equally important we enjoy this time of the year. Health should never be something that adds to our stress, but something we do out of self care to make sure we feel our best, so we can enjoy the world around us. So no matter what or where or if you celebrate, have a happy, healthy holiday season!
